Term: Phytophthora

« Back to Glossary Index

A genus of water molds containing species which can cause damage to a wide variety of plants and agricultural crops. Although commonly referred to as a fungus, it is actually in a different kingdom. This doesn’t stop it from causing root rot, however, and it can also give rise to stem and fruit rot. Symptoms of infection vary but can include leaf drop, leaf spots, and plant/shoot dieback. Avoid overwatering or growing in poorly-drained/waterlogged soils. Infected plants must be removed.
